We check depth, look for gaps and compression, and tell you your real R-value. If a top-off will do, we say so. If it needs to come out, we show you why.

How much is your attic insulation actually worth?
Pop your head into the attic hatch with a tape measure. Measure how deep the insulation is in a few spots, pick what it looks like, and slide to the depth. The checker gives you a rough R-value and how it compares to where a Bay Area attic should be.
Compressed, patchy or rodent-damaged insulation performs below these numbers, so treat the result as a best case. For the real answer, we measure it in person.

We measure depth, check for moisture, pests and air leaks, and take photos so you can see what we saw.

Most jobs are one day. We clean up, show you the finished work and leave the attic card with the installed R-value.

Who does insulation in San Jose and the Bay Area?
Thermal Insulation is a licensed insulation contractor based in San Jose (CSLB #1162053) with 19+ years in the trade. We handle attic insulation, insulation removal, drill and fill wall insulation, batts, crawl spaces, spray foam and rigid foam board for homes and commercial buildings across the Bay Area.
What R-value should a Bay Area attic have?
Most Bay Area attics should land between R-38 and R-49. ENERGY STAR recommends R-49 for an uninsulated attic in the San Jose climate, and new attic work in California is usually taken to R-49. Many older homes we inspect are sitting somewhere between R-11 and R-19.
Do I need to remove my old insulation before adding new?
Not always. If the old insulation is dry, clean and free of rodent droppings, we can usually add on top of it. If it is wet, moldy, smoke damaged or contaminated by rodents, it should come out first so the new material is not sitting on the problem.
How long does an insulation job take?
Most single family attic jobs are done in one day. A full removal, sanitize and reinstall usually takes one to two days. Wall drill and fill, crawl spaces and spray foam run one to three days depending on the size of the house.
Are there rebates for insulation in the Bay Area right now?
Fewer than there used to be. The BayREN Home+ insulation rebate ended in August 2024, and the federal 25C tax credit does not cover insulation installed after December 31, 2025. Some income qualified and utility programs still exist, so ask us and we will tell you what currently applies to your home.
Do you do commercial insulation too?
Yes. We insulate commercial and light industrial buildings as well as homes, including rigid foam board, spray foam, batts in new construction and insulation removal. Call to walk through the scope of your project.
